Core Set 2021 looks like it was designed with the immortal words of original Ghostbuster Peter Venkman in mind: “Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes! Volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!”
If the world’s going crazy then Magic: The Gathering’s new set looks to be driving this funny bus. Let Mulligan’s Gaming Pub take you on a little journey through the newest core set.
We’ll keep you in Wonderland and show you just how far the rabbit hole goes by covering:
- Planeswalkers
- Reprints
- Tribal Options
- Enchantments
Back to the Future (Planeswalkers)
Roads? Where the newest Core Set of MTG is going, you don’t need any roads. As long as Teferi is your Doc Brown, then you’ll be the master of time. At least that’s kind of his thing. In reality, core sets have always brought us reoccurring great planeswalkers in new incarnations. They are also known for introducing new planeswalkers that have relevant story arcs. Core Set 2021 is no exception. The planeswalkers for core set 2021 are:
Basri Ket: This three-drop white planeswalker who acts as a creature buffer, token maker, and army enhancer. There’s also a six-drop version that gives target creatures vigilance, buffs when attacking, and one-turn anthem effects.
Teferi Master of Time: Four drop blue planeswalker who boasts flash speed planeswalker abilities, card draw, creature phasing, and maxes by giving you two extra turns.
Liliana, Waker of the Dead: This four-drop black Lily is a dredge deck’s dream. She makes opponents discard or lose life, provides escalating creature removal, and attacks by stealing creatures from graveyards.
Chandra, Heart of Fire: Another longtime planeswalker, the new Chandra is a five-drop red card burner that adds extra casting options, burn, and additional mana.
Garruk, Unleashed: This four-drop falls right in the wheelhouse of players who prefer green. Garruk is all about buffing creatures, adding creatures to the field, or finding the creature you need in your deck late in game.
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon: He’s baaack! Every aggro player’s least favorite dragon returns. This returning eight-drop colorless planeswalker deals damage, offers board wipes, and has a max ability that essentially guarantees your victory.
Old Favorites Return
Core Set 2021 offers a slew of these classic reprints. These cards tempt and deny us with the same trickery they have in the past. Some of the standout reprints from the Core Set 2021 include:
Raining Cats and Dogs
Core Set 2021 turned classic idioms into magical realities because this set has both cats and dogs as tribal options. Will it be cats vs. dogs? Or cat-dog friendship? Either theme you choose promises to be entertaining. It also includes to say the least. It has produced one of the single most entertaining arts ever printed on a magic card with Rin and Seri, Inseparable. This red green and white 4/4 legendary set of cat-dog best friends makes tokens and deals damage or gains you life based upon your tribal theme.
We Meet Again At Last
The circle is complete. When we last saw legendary enchantment shrines we were learning from Champions of Kamigawa in 2004. Now we can be masters of Core Set 2021. The shrines of Core Set 2021 are classic examples of the colors they represent:
Sanctum of Fruitful Harvest: green, produces mana
Sanctum of Shattered Heights: red, burns
Sanctum of Calm Waters: blue, draws cards
Sanctum of Stone Fangs: black, drains life
Sanctum of Tranquil Light: white, taps down a creature
Sanctum of All: five colors, shrine searching and boosting
