The latest Magic: the Gathering set, Kaldheim, is inspired heavily by Viking culture and Nordic mythology. Berserkers, Gods, vehicles, snow, and more will have you cheering “Skol!” when you come to get your cards at Mulligan’s Gaming Pub. Mulligans Gaming Pub is not going to just leave you guessing. In this article we will feature all the newest stuff from Kaldheim, including:
- Tribal Themes
- Mechanics
- New “Types”
- How and Where to Get Your Kaldheim Fix at Mulligan’s
Vikings Valued Brotherhood
Kaldheim has a fairly obvious and overarching tribal theme. In Kaldheim, there are realms that all exist around a world tree of creation. Each realm draws from a two-color combination of mana and a common creature type. Let’s take a closer look at these realms:
- Istfell is the blue/white world inhabited by Spirits that didn’t fall in battle
- Karfell is the blue/black world plagued by Viking Zombies and one last feral tribe of primal Humans
- Immersturm is the blue/red world inhabited by warmongering Demons
- Gnottvold is the red/green world lush with Trolls
- Bretagard is the green/white world in which Humans thrive
- Starnheim is the white/black world that is graced by Angels (Valkyrie) and fallen heroes of the battle
- Surtland is the red/blue world suffering from internal conflict between the frost and fire Giants
- Skemfar is the black/green world where wood and dark elves lurk.
- Axgard is the red/white world where Dwarves forged their place.
- Littjara is the blue/green world clouded by mysterious shapeshifters and changelings.
Mechanics, Both New and Returning
- Foretell: Pay 2 mana and exile a card with foretell face down from your hand. You may cast the card for its foretell cost. This also usually triggers some other effect.
- Boast: This mechanic affects an activated ability, enhancing the ability while also adding a drawback. For example, a creature might get +1/+1 … but only after it attacks.
- Changeling: A key mechanic to tie all the various realms in this set together, any card Changeling has the ability to be every creature type, making it a good fit in any tribal deck.
- Poison: Scars of Mirrodin was the last time we saw Poison, which puts a poison counter on a player. Once a player has 10 poison counters, they automatically lose the game.
Get to Know These Card Types
- Saga Enchantments: This is the second time , have seen the Sagas. However, this time they are multicolored.
- Snow: Snow returns to MTG for the first time in quite awhile. While Snow has no actual abilities itself, many cards specify “snow or ice”. What’s new and exciting about Snow for the first time is it exists on non-permanent cards.
- Rune: Rune is a subtype for aura enchantments, which allow them be attached to a creature or object and boost both equally.
- Shard: An interesting new subtype Shard only can be found on tokens. Shard grants the token an enchantment with the ability to “pay 2 mana, sacrifice this enchantment and you may scry 1, then draw 1.”
