Playing a game of Magic with a close-knit group of friends has become more popular in recent months. Maybe you’re a longtime player tired of grinding in competitive tournaments. Or you’ve not had the chance to play competitively in person due to restrictions on mass gatherings in some areas during the COVID-19 pandemic. As many people have learned through the years, once you’ve gamed with the same people for long enough, you start to try and find new ways to spice up their gaming. EDH is often one of the best ways to spice up your experience playing Magic. Whether you have an EDH deck currently built or you’re just looking to get into the 100-card habit, Mulligan’s Gaming Pub wants to throw some Commander suggestions your way that may not have considered.
One Card to Rule Them All
If you’re used to Standard or drafting, EDH is a whole different animal. You have a 100 card deck, as opposed to 60 or 40 cards. Moreover, that deck can’t contain any duplicates, aside from basic lands. You can search online and peruse the current meta to find Commanders that can lead you to wins—provided you’ve got the hundreds (or, sometimes, thousands) of dollars to build the deck. Our focus here is for you to have fun playing the format, and our Commander suggestions can be broken down into three categories:
Tribal Weirdness
Tribal decks have had a long-standing home in every format of Magic that’s ever been played. As Magic’s card base has grown over the years, the rise in unintentional and different tribal themes has grown. With that said, we’ve got fairly new tribal commanders for your next EDH deck.
- Gallia of the Endless Dance: Are you ready to throw a whole bunch of Gruul satyrs at your opponents? Gallia is a 2-drop 2/2 with Haste. She pumps other satyrs and can help you draw cards. There’s no reason that Gallia couldn’t be an extremely fun Commander with a decent win rate to boot.
- Toski, Bearer of Secrets: When you saw that they were printing a legendary squirrel, if you didn’t immediately want to make a tribal squirrel deck for EDH, well, what can we say? We probably don’t understand each other. Did we forget to mention that Toski is an indestructible squirrel that can’t be countered, attacks each combat, and helps you draw cards?
Shake Up Gameplay
With Commander games often involving more than two players, being able to play effects and cards to mess with the entire table is part of the appeal.
- Braids, Conjurer Adept: Everybody loves Braids, right? If you haven’t considered her as a Commander, consider how much you will affect the game by allowing everyone to drop a permanent for free on each of their turns. Playing a Commander who benefits your opponents as much as you also makes it less likely that card becomes a target.
- Pramikon, Sky Rampart: In any multiplayer format, whether it be EDH, two-headed giant or a friendly kitchen table game, this glimmering wall can shake up things by limiting the available targets.
Themed Decks
When we say themed Commanders, we’re referring to a card you can use as the anchor for an entertaining synergy throughout your 100-card deck.
- Bruvac the Grandiloquent: Yup we said it! Build an EDH mill deck. No one likes playing against mill decks, and to be fair, they’re not that much fun to play either. You’ll be entertained by the end of your first match and hey, who needs friends anyway?
- Angus Mackenzie: This is the ultimate EDH pillow fort Commander, with his ability to prevent all combat damage that would be dealt during that turn. Play this guy and you can expect the rest of the table to try and kill him on sight.
