Come one! Come all! From Mirrodin to the Throne of Eldraine, Magic The Gathering’s Modern format will be in the spotlight for the Modern Star City Games Invitational Qualifier at Mulligan’s Gaming Pub this Saturday, November 2, 2019, at our location at 5334 Fort Henry Drive in Kingsport, TN. It all starts at 12 p.m.

Bring your favorite Modern deck. It could be Burn, Tron, Amulet Titan, Dredge, Infect, or the best tribal you can think of—is it Humans? Maybe Merfolk? Elves? Heck, you can even bring your mill deck. (On second thought, don’t bring the mill deck.) Just make sure it’s Modern-legal, you have $35 for entry, and get ready to duel.

Mulligan’s Gaming Pub is also offering a feast during the event. This catered meal consists of Guinness Stew, mashed potatoes, and a drink for just $10.

What’s at stake?

To the victors go the spoils. In this SCG IQ, you can walk away with prizes that include Star City Games Points, cash, an Ultimate Guard Deck Box, a SCG exclusive play mat, and qualifications to the next SCG Invitational. All players who top 8 will receive their Ultimate Guard Deck Box and SCG exclusive play mat. Additional prize support breaks down as follows:

1st place: $400, Qualification to the next SCG Invitational, 3 SCG points

2nd place: $200, Qualification to the next SCG Invitational, 3 SCG points

3rd & 4th place: $100, Qualification to the next SCG Invitational, 2 SCG points

5th through 8th place: $50, 1 SEC point

Not sure what deck to play?

For those who are looking for an edge or some advice for the IQ, consider a couple of things. You should play the meta according to your strengths, weakness and what’s popular in your region—which could include players within a 100-mile radius of Kingsport. If you’re just looking for some statistically strong decks, and you followed October’s Modern results from SCG events, you know that Amulet Titan, Burn, and UR Storm are on the rise in wins. Dredge and Death’s Shadow are settling players into some top 8 seats as well. If you’re more of a classicist who is playing something like Martyr Life, Ad Nauseam, or CopyCat, then you may have to work for this win.

Remember… play smarter, not harder. Decks like Humans, Valakut, and Creatures Toolbox may need a few local or personal tweaks to win, but they’re still contenders.

Keep up with all the news.

Mulligan’s Gaming Pub wants to make sure you’re in the know. We want to know that you know about the things you’d like to know …. you know?

  • Starting with this IQ, all of our major upcoming events will be catered. That means no struggling to get to a fast-food place and back in between rounds because your last three opponents have been slow-rolling control decks.
  • Monday is now for Modern. That’s right, we’re open every Monday now, and weekly Modern tournaments fire at 7 p.m.
  • No major changes have been made to MTG’S current ban list for Modern as of 8/30/19. A big shift came to Standard, with Field of the Dead getting banned earlier this month—and rumors that Oko might be next.
