Dual Land “Did You Know”s
- Often referred to as “the dual lands,” original dual lands were printed only during Alpha, Beta, and Revised.
- Dual lands were the creation of Richard Garfield and were simply each combination of the basic lands—meaning there were 10 types of them.
- Technically, there were only nine types of dual lands in Alpha. A production error meant that Volcanic Island was not printed. After being left off of the “rare” sheet, Volcanic Island was placed on the sheets in the printing of Beta.
- Richard Garfield knew that these lands would be powerful but that was why he made them rare. He didn’t realize the growth of game development that was coming for Magic. That’s why he assumed people would spend the same time and money on Magic cards that they would spend on any other game. Boy was he wrong!
Tournament Information
Now that you know a little about the original lands be prepared to learn about how you can win one of these coveted valuable cards. Mulligan’s Gaming Pub is having an EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander), otherwise called Commander, tournament. We will be allowing gold-bordered cards for the event, and proxies for high-dollar cards (so you don’t have to shuffle them). If you plan on using gold-bordered cards then don’t plan on using see-through sleeves. If you want to use proxies then kindly show a member of the Mulligan’s Gaming Pub staff before the tournament begins.
Costs: This is a big tournament with a big prize. However, it only costs $30 to enter this event for a shot at the once-in-a-lifetime prize.
Prize: Our winner will walk away with a Volcanic Island. This card ranks among the rarest and most expensive in Magic because of their missed printing and strength. Any additional prizes will be given out based on tournament attendance.
When and Where: This insanely exciting Commander tournament will be held on February 15th, 2020. The start time for this event is 1 p.m., at our store located at 5334 Fort Henry Drive in Kingsport, TN.
We don’t want to oversell this event… but get real, it’s for a Volcanic Island! This is a huge deal. So bring your Esper deck, led by Aminatou, the Fateshifter. Bring your Hoogak, Gitrog, Iname, Sai, and even Azusa. You can get down with Will Kenrith or Rowan Kenrith for all we care. Just get down here and play.
